Exploring the Father Mike Schmitz Catholic Podcast

Once I had my daughter, I quickly realized how challenging it would be for the foreseeable future to find free time for myself. At the end of my work day, I usually had time to go to the gym, cook a decent dinner and read a book or watch a TV show before going to bed. When I went back to work full-time at the end of my maternity leave, it was difficult to squeeze in time for myself. After a long work day, all I wanted to do was soak up the brief time I had with her before bed time and then it was usually back to my laptop to wrap up my tasks for the day. Needless to say, becoming effective at multi tasking was necessary. This is when I discovered the beauty of audio books and podcasts! Whether I was on the treadmill at lunch time, on a late night neighborhood walk, cooking dinner or on the way to and from day care, I loved that I could still find the time to squeeze in a book or a podcast episode. Prior to having my daughter, I never once used the audio book or podcast features on Spotify simply because I had the time to pick up a physical book or turn on the TV.
This is how I found the Father Mike Schmitz Catholic Podcast. I was introduced to Father Mike through an online preparation class that my husband and I were required to take prior to having our daughter baptized in the Catholic Church. I was immediately drawn to his way of teaching. I loved his passion for each topic and his ability to connect the teachings of the bible back to everyday life. After taking this course, I was eager to explore more of his content and even began to attend a few of his virtual masses online on days when we had not made it to mass in person. A quick spotify search brought me to his personal podcast. What I love most about this podcast is Father Mike’s ability to take large, complex topics and break them down into bite-sized micro episodes. The length of these episodes are kept short, which makes it easy to finish them in a car ride or while on a jog, which really fits into my lifestyle during this season.
Father Mike, although a devout Catholic, offers a Christian perspective on topics that all of us face in the outside world and I find him to be quite relatable and realistic. I highly recommend this podcast and am also in the process of listening to his “The Bible in a Year” podcast, which is also on Spotify. Even if you are not a Catholic, I encourage you to give this one a try; you may be surprised!
